What is Balanced Literacy?
The Balanced Literacy Program is a comprehensive, differentiated approach to reading and writing instruction. It is based on a framework that is designed to help all students learn to read and write effectively.
This year, the students and I will learn various reading strategies and techniques in reading which will increase our ability to better understand what we read and enhance our ability to write more realistic and wholesome drafts .The students will maintain interactive reading notebooks, which will serve as a living document of their learning.
Required Materials
2 composition notebooks (August - December, January - June)
earphones
sharpened pencils
colored pencils
glue stick
scissors
Attendance
It is important that each student attends school every day. Many of our assignments will be done in Novel Study groups, and I would hate for the student to miss out on those experiences. Whenever possible, weekday doctor's appointments should be arranged after 2:00 p.m.
In the event of being tardy or absent, it is the student's responsibility to get the necessary assignments that were missed. The student will receive the same amount of time to make up assignments as days missed.
3rd -5th Grade Grading Process
● 90-100% = A
● 80-89% = B
● 70-79% = C
● 60-69% = D
● *50-59% = F
● *The lowest grade that will be assigned to an informal assignment is a 50%. Lower grades
may appear throughout the quarter and on progress reports; however, all informal grades
between 0-49% will be changed to a 50% before report card submission.
● All students scoring below 70% on formal assignments will be given another opportunity to
demonstrate mastery after re-teaching is provided. The highest possible score that will be
given in the grade book is 79%.
● Cumulative tests will be counted as an informal grade and percentages will be reflective of
EOG aligned scores, not percent correct. (Ex: a 60% in 5th grade science is a level 3
therefore should be represented as a C in the grade book.)
● Homework will be graded for completion only, not accuracy.
● Late assignments must be accepted for partial credit up until the last day of the quarter.
Let's have a great year of learning!!!
